Inserts of sides elements: Some fundamental elements make the map readable, while others can be considered additional but recommended. Fundamental elements are legend, North arrow, scale bar, coordinate grid, and title. Additional elements include information on date, author, institution, map projection, datum, and acknowledgements and the neat line, the rectangular visual frame for the map).
Visual hierarchy: In a map, the different side elements and main figures (such as data frames, photos, etc.) need to be arranged in a way that makes the map clear, easily readable, and pleasant to look at. For example, the scale bar, reference grid, North arrow, and text information are background elements and cannot appear more important than the main figures. Visual hierarchy (see also Tait 2018) is defined as “the separation of the map layers into planes of information” (Buckley and Fields 2011) and is related to the Figure-Ground concept (see Arnheim 1965). Figure 6.28 shows an example of a well-balanced map with a fine visual hierarchy; the main theme is perfectly visible, while the secondary data frame is readable and does not take up too much space on the map. The side elements are clear and readable. Figure 6.29 shows an example of poor map design in which the visual hierarchy has not been well-planned and some elements are missing. In this map, the legend for the DTM is missing as well as the credits and the author information. The north arrow is too big and maybe too fancy and the grid lines are not so useful. The choice of the colors is not good as well as the dimension of the dot representing the dams (they are too big). In addition, the colors in the insert have a poor contrast (the state of South Carolina is not well visible) and the labels of lakes are too big and not consistent with the rest of the map.
